Caring for Your Highlights

You will need to maintain the vibrancy of your highlights by using a shampoo and conditioner especially formulated for color-treated hair. Make sure your shampoo contain an antioxidant and UV filters to your protect hair. Keep your light ends hydrated with a leave-in treatment which is designed to moisturize and protect from heat styling. Avoid chlorinated water as well as too much sun as these can alter the appearance of your highlights/low-lights.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Highlights

What type of hair highlights are usually offered at the salon?

There are multiple types of highlights available at the salon. You can receive traditional foil highlights or frosting highlights with a cap. There are balayage highlights or foiliage highlights where you can have traditional foil highlights with balayage preformed in-between. There is also the foil wrap highlighting technique or face framing highlights (AKA money-piece). There is also the halo hairline foiling technique for extra blonde brightness around the face and hairline. Highlights can be any color. As long as it’s a lighter level than the surrounding hair.

Do highlights require a lot of maintenance?

The maintenance of your highlights depends on the type of highlights you receive. More subtle sunkissed highlights require less maintenance usually 3-4 months between salon visits. Though a toner or glossing may be needed between salon visits to maintain shine and keep correct tonality. Bolder chunkier highlights will have more upkeep at the salon usually around 6-8 weeks between salon visits.

Can gray hair be highlighted?

Yes gray hair can be highlighted. There is a great method for gray blending that diffuses gray hair with strands of blonde making for a undetectable blend. Also, face highlights can be added to natural gray hair for another low maintenance gray blending option.

What’s the difference between Lowlights vs Highlights?

Highlights are a service in which strands of hair are lightened by bleaching or using a high lift color to lighten the natural base color of your hair. Lowlights are a service in which strands of hair are colored a darker color. This is done to create depth or contrast against your natural color. You can choose from a highlighting service or Iowlighting service. Or try both highlights and lowlights in a single service for extra dimension against your natural base color.

What’s the difference between Highlights and Balayage?

Though Balayage and highlighting are both hair coloring and blonding techniques they are not the same services.

Highlighting traditionally uses foils or a cap and adds lightener/bleach/high lift color to specific sections of the hair for a dimensional look. Highlighting creates a more evenly uniform look throughout the hair but also creates depth, volume and texture.

Balayage on the other hand is a technique that involves a gradual color transition from darker roots to lighter ends. Instead of traditional foil highlights, Balayage is applied by painting the color or lightener onto the hair by hand section by section. It is applied in a sweeping motion, which creates a natural, sun-kissed hue without any harsh contrast between colors. Balayage is a great low-maintenance technique, but not the same as highlights.

Can you highlight already highlighted hair?

The answer is yes. You can get your hair highlighted if it has already been highlighted prior, and many do, but it is highly advised to use the services of a blonding or color specialist. That’s because overlapping bleach can result in damage to hair. An experienced salon professional knows how to navigate this safely. A thorough consultation is always advised. If your hair is previously damaged, it may take multiple sessions to get your hair healthy again before any bleaching or lightening can be done.
